For the first time Aberystwyth hosted their first Race for Life 10k event to go along with their ever so popular 5k event held every year on the promenade. This years event was supported by over 1000 pink army members and boy was it a good one.
Date: 15th May 2016
Time: 11 am
Told to arrive 45 minutes before race begins. Totally too early. Next time i will aim to arrive at around 10.40 as warm up didn't begin until around 10.45. Standing around waiting was long but only because we got so cold chatting. The warm up was so fun and the entertainment on stage did make the time pass quicker.
Weather: Sunny Sunny Sunny with a breeze on the prom which was glorious while running
Course: Along the Prom from the bandstand towards the harbour and back all the way towards constitution hill and back to harbour. We then turned off away from the 5k runners towards the 10k route. We followed the path past Rummers and behind the police station to skate park and turned off for the path to Penparcau and back again. Eventually we rejoined the prom and to the finish line,
My race:
We arrived early and soaked up the sun and atmosphere and joined in with the fun warm up. It was a couple of dance routines led by the ladies who run the classes at Aber Uni. They were very fun and easy routine's that got you pumped for the race.
I started off too far back, again, (every time when will I learn). I ran with a friend from running club and for the first mile we dodged through the crowds together at a lovely pace. At 1 mile I decided to dash off the crowds were stressing me out and I was struggling to find a rhythm. We were bundled up in the crowds who were walking, doing a bit of walk/run and some doing a gentle jog with dogs and tiny kids in pink tutu. After I darted off I found pace of around 9.50 which I tried to maintain but I felt a bit flat. I eat a few haribo's at mile 4 just to give me a boost. It seemed to work and I plodded on to the finish line.
I was gutted with my time of 1 hour and 30 seconds. I was annoyed with myself for staying back at the start as I would have got a sub 60 10k. Nevermind I had a lovely time and really enjoyed the well organised race.
